Names

Description

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), usually calcite, sometimes aragonite. It may contain considerable amounts of magnesium carbonate (dolomite). Most limestones have a granular texture, but limestone can also be massive, crystalline or clastic.
Most limestones are formed by the deposition and consolidation of the skeletons of marine invertebrates.
Limestone can also be formed by chemical precipitation from solution.

Color

usually white or grey, but maybe coloured due to content of iron oxides (brown, yellow, red) or carbon (blueish, grey, black).

Grain Size

usually fine grained, but may also be medium to coarse grained

Texture

mostly granular, but also crystalline, clastic or massive.

Minerals

calcite, aragonite, dolomite, contains often quartz, clay minerals

Occurences

various sites all over the world, about 10% of all sediments are limestones
