Description

Calcareous sinter differ from typical travertines and tufas in that they are predominantly inorganic in origin. They are controlled by high water temperatures in thermal springs, high ion content in mineral springs and high running rates of water.

Color

usually white or grey, but maybe coloured due to content of iron oxides (brown, yellow, red) or carbon (blueish, grey, black).

Texture

The fabric is characterized by long-prismatic crystals or corresponds to bundles of fibrous crystals. Crystal layers are separated by thin partings of microcrystalline carbonate.
